What to Bring on Your Snowshoe or Ski Tour

Here’s what to bring to make your Yellowstone experience even more comfortable:

Warm Clothing & Layers

Yellowstone's winter temperatures can dip to -40°F or more, with highs barely above freezing. Outdoor clothing plus layers of wool, down, or synthetics are best (avoid cotton).

Equipment Included

Pack a camera for winter landscape photos. Don't forget an extra battery—cold temps can drain them faster. Bring any other viewing or recording devices to document your adventure.

Sunscreen and Sunglasses

High elevation and snow amplify UV rays, even in winter. Pack sunglasses, sunscreen (30 SPF or higher) and sun protection.

Hydration

Pack a water bottle or hydration pack, and sip often on the tour. Yellowstone’s cold air and elevation make it easy to get dehydrated when you're not feeling hot.

Snowshoe & Ski Tour Testimonials

Our 4 person group did a guided 1/2 day snowshoe tour led by Ben. We had a wonderful experience and Ben shared a lot of very interesting information about the area and the wildlife. His knowledge made our trip even more memorable. The trip was well-paced with enough active portions combined with breaks when he would share interesting facts. Highly recommend this group and Ben as a guide.

Cara was great!!! My wife and I hired Cara as a cross country skiing guide in Yellowstone but we got so much more than that. Cara knew were to find a trail with snow (which was surprisingly scarce during our trip) that matched my beginner skiing experience level, she gave great instructions, and she had a great sense of humor while helping me up when I fell. She stopped for some wildlife viewing on the way to the ski trail and we were able to see 4 moose and a coyote very clearly through her spotting scope. She even sent us pictures of the outing, including the wildlife, a day later. She was prepared with bear spray and an emergency beacon and she was very good at wearing a mask and social distancing. We even learned about some of the geology of the park and about a wolverine siting near where we skied. We left with great memories and with a new friend. Hire her. You won't regret it.

Our family of six (parents and two young adult couples) spent three different days with Cara on a full-day wildlife tour, a half-day snowshoe tour, and a half-day cross-country ski tour. Having her as our guide made all the difference in our experience of Yellowstone. We had different levels of knowledge about the park, skills with the activities, etc., and she seamlessly adjusted herself to each person. She took us to the right spots, quickly set up and took down scopes, answered our many questions with knowledge and good humor, provided hot drinks and delicious snacks, helped us with rental equipment, was a kind and patient teacher, etc. Honestly, we cannot say enough good about Cara and highly recommend using her as a guide.

Frequently Asked Tour Questions

Are children allowed on ski or snowshoe tours?

Yes, children are welcome to participate on XC ski and snowshoe tours, but they need to be physically capable of walking and taking instruction about how to move their body. XC ski equipment for very small feet may not be available locally, so we would need to allow some level of flexibility.

Small children will need to be supported in their participation. Toddlers may participate by riding in a small pull sled. Some parents bring infants who ride in a carry pack. The pack should have features to support their head and neck.

What kind of wildlife are active during Yellowstone’s winter?

While snowshoeing and cross-country skiing is best for taking in Yellowstone’s landscape, soundscape and scenery; we often see wildlife tracks, bison, elk and smaller animals. We occasionally see or hear wolves, coyotes, foxes and moose.

How difficult are these ski tours?

Because the trips are private (just you or you and your friends/family), we can modify the difficulty depending on the capabilities of the group. However, at a minimum, these trips require the amount of effort that it takes to walk (easiest trips) or hike (harder trips).

We do use some different movements and muscles, so participants tend to feel like they have learned some new skills and have gotten some exercise.

I am traveling from Big Sky or Bozeman. Can I do this tour?

Yes, but you will have a 1.5 hour one-way drive from Bozeman or 3 hour one-way drive from Big Sky. Our flexible start times for half day and snow sampler (2-3 hour) trips help make this possible.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 30 days before your trip date to get a full refund minus a 10% credit card and processing fee. Cancel 5-29 days before your trip date to get a 50% refund.

We typically do not issue refunds if you cancel within 5 days of your booked tour. However, please contact us if exceptional circumstances keep you from attending as we may be able to make alternative arrangements.
