Yellowstone Backpacking

Yellowstone Backpacking Trips

Get off the beaten path and enjoy parts of the park others rarely see on a Yellowstone backpacking trip. We offer group backpacking trips on set dates in Yellowstone that you can join if you like the route and want to meet other hikers. We also offer fully custom, private backpacking trips throughout Yellowstone with a duration and difficulty level just for you and your friends or family. Backpacking is a great way to recharge your body and mind, meet your own challenges, or just relax and ponder the wonders in front of you. Don't want to sleep on the ground in a tent? Check out our cabin-based trips (below).

Biologist Guide

We love using our expert local ecological knowledge to help you see and learn about the aspects of Yellowstone that you are interested in. We'll also help you stay safe while you go wild!

Picnic

We provide delicious snacks on half-day hikes, or picnic lunch on full-day hikes

Weather and Elevation

Yellowstone has a dry, high-elevation climate. Weather varies A LOT! We can have 60 degree (F) temperature changes in a day. Bring clothing layers. Thunderstorms and snow can happen in any month.

Amazing Optics

Binoculars are provided on your hike, so you won't miss out on the action!

Family Friendly + Accessible

Hikes can be adapted to accommodate most ages and abilities. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have specific needs.

Stay Hydrated!

BYO water bottle or hydration pack and drink plenty of water to have your best day. You'll need 2 liters per person for half day hikes or 3 liters per person for full day hikes.

Private Yellowstone Backcountry Treks (May-October)

Moderate routes fully immerse you in the wonder of Yellowstone’s splendor. Choose routes with hot springs, water falls, abundant wildlife, peaceful lakes, or mountain scenery. We recommend at least 2 nights/3 days to give us time to get to the best of the backcountry. Longer itineraries are available.

Our Favorites Include:

Bechler
Waterfalls and hot springs, easy to moderate 4-6 days, best in late summer and early fall
Black Canyon of the Yellowstone
Wildlife rich, incredible view and epic riverside routes, moderate 2-3 days, best in spring and fall
Pebble Creek to Slough Creek
Big meadows, epic mountain views, beautiful creeks, moderate 2-4 days, good all summer
Northwestern Yellowstone
Epic views, challenging routes, incredible solitude, moderately difficult 3-6 day routes, best from mid June to early fall
Heart Lake
Southern Yellowstone’s incredible mixture of views, geothermal features, lake and big meadows, easy to moderate 2-4 days, best in late summer and fall
Short & Sweet Family Friendly Backpacking Trips
Routes vary; there are several incredible backcountry campsites on easy to moderate routes that can make enjoyable 2 -3 day adventures that are great for those short on time, or who want to introduce kids to the joys of camping under the stars. We recommend 1 night/2 days or 2 nights/3 days with not more than 5 miles hiking per day on easier terrain.

If you like getting away from the crowds but are not keen to sleep on the ground with bears all around, stay in a cabin surrounded by stunning landscape vistas. The cabin can sleep up to 10 people. Hiking conditions are best after July 1st, once the snow has melted at this higher elevation.

Reviews

Spent the past 4 nights/5 days in the Bechler region of Yellowstone NP backpacking with Cara. It was a trip of a lifetime and Cara’s expert knowledge, attention to detail and kindness made this trip spectacular. She customized a trip that was both adventurous and relaxing at the same time. I have hiked with Cara on two separate trips and always make sure to book with her when in Yellowstone!

Cara was able to piece together a backpacking trip in Montana's beautiful Gallatin National Forest despite not having access to Yellowstone national park due to the 1000 year flood that occurred during June of 2022. Without Cara and Ben, we would not have been able to have a trip that my family had been looking forward to for 8 months. We had a great trip and will have memories for a life time! Thank you Cara for all of your hard work and effort on our behalf!
